Flavored Lip Gloss & TINte Cosmetic's Creator Stacy Reid's Bella Magazine Interview
How did you come up with the idea of your own beauty range?
The inspiration behind TINte Cosmetics was that I could never find a lip gloss that could moisturize & heal my lips, and tasted good. It was at this point that I realized I had to create a lip gloss that nourished my lips, tasted great and looked beautiful. From this need TINte’s Flavored lip glosses enriched with Shea Butter were created. My very first lip gloss came in a similar vintage slider tin. This nostalgic feeling from my childhood made me want to recreate sweet memories for the sophisticated women of today.
How did you started knowing nothing about beauty industry?
My background was the fashion industry and although fashion and beauty go hand and hand it it a completely different industry that I had to break into. I was probably a bit naive when I first started because it was new to me but you have to learn things quickly and find the best way to position yourself in the industry. .
Tell us about your business name, how did you come up with that?
The name “TINte” means color, we put the emphasis on the TIN as slider tins flavored lip glosses are what were are most known for and one of the first products I created.
What was your biggest challenge when starting out? How old have you been then?
I was 31 years old. My biggest challenge was to get my brand recognized in sea of other beauty brands. That was difficult, but once your product it out there and it’s a good product, people start to notice you and so do the beauty editors. Another challenge is accepting that your plan may change. Being open to that change can bring bigger and better opportunities your way that you never imagined. .
How long did it take to actually have your own range and selling it? When was the official launch?
It took about a year and a half to develop the packaging and to get the formulations and shades ready for the market. We officially launched in March 2004.
There is a huge competition in beauty industry, what's your secret to success? What make you different from other beauty brands?
What makes us different of the look and feel of our brand. I took something that was nostalgic for me (our Flavored lip gloss in the slider tin) and brought it back to life for the modern day woman. Our secret to success is that our products speak for themselves. Our whole concept behind TINte Cosmetics was to bring back sweet memories and create products that are multi functional, easy to use, taste great and moisturize your lips. I hear from so many customers that love our brand and the way it makes them feel. .
What is your all time bestseller? What is your favorite product?
Our all time best seller is our Bubble Gum Flavored Lip Gloss. The color is great, the taste is great, it’s funny because I initially had a different pink shade that we almost launched, in the final hours I changed the shade to be lighter. I’m glad did as it has proven to be our best and most coveted shade! I have several favorites from our Flavored Lip Shine glosses to our slider tins glosses and all in one beauty kits. I love our Sun Kissed Shimmering Face Pearl. it’s such a beautiful shade and can be worn so many different ways. I also love our flavored lip glosses in the slider tin as it brings back the memory of my very first lip gloss that came in a similar slider tin and I reminisce every time I apply.
What advice do you have for other women who dream of having their own cosmetic company? Your tips to succeed as one today?
Have a plan and a clear vision and stick to it. There will be people that tell you you can’t do it or it’s too hard, but don’t listen to them. Stay true to your idea, work hard and do everything yourself at the beginning it’s the best way to learn your business inside and out!
